When the casting is correct the production is taken to another level.
This thought springs to mind while watching Rare Productions’ Peter Pan at Theatre Royal Winchester where Wendy, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and Smee are absolutely perfect for their roles.
Fluttering Tinkerbell, humorous Hook and simpering Smee bring comedy to the stage, helping ensure that the audience’s attention is held for the two hour duration. Heidi particularly enjoys Captain Hook’s choice of vocabulary, which includes whippersnapper. Smee’s air guitar takes some beating and we appreciate his accent.
The songs are loud and upbeat, challenging for the young singers and Tiger Lily and her gang are pretty competent dancers.
“I like Peter Pan’s fringe and slip ons,” says Heidi.
This is a lively musical adaptation of JM Barrie’s classic featuring youngsters aged seven to 21 from Winchester and surrounding areas. One of the Lost Boys is so infectiously happy and smiley that you can’t help but smile along with her. It’s lovely to see children so happy to be performing.
On until August 1, 2026. Tickets from £15.
